Nearly 40,000,000 people visited Las Vegas in 2012, and by most
accounts the Las Vegas Strip was the third or fourth most popular
tourist attraction in the world, dwarfing tourism icons such as Disney
World and Niagara Falls.
The city’s appeals are obvious, and the vast majority of visitors
come for the gambling, world class dining, entertainment, and frenetic
24/7 action that outpaces every other U.S. city in terms of raw energy.
Virtually every visitor to Las Vegas will stroll The Strip, catching the
dancing fountain show at Bellagio, the erupting volcano at the Mirage,
or the animated statues at Caesars Palace. Many will crane their necks
to look up at the city’s own “Eiffel Tower,” and most will make it to
recently revived Downtown Las Vegas and its Fremont Street Experience.
But almost all will miss a slate of very interesting and unique
lesser known options, well worth seeking out and many of them available
no place else.
For instance, while Las Vegas is well known for its poker sharks, very few visitors know that Mandalay Bay’s aquarium, Shark Reef,
is on of the few in the world that allows SCUBA certified guests to get
in the tank and swim with actual sharks, such as the fierce Sand Tiger.
In the same vein, several resorts worldwide let you swim with dolphins,
but only the Mirage offers a Dolphin Trainer For The Day program – and even Dolphin Yoga!Cars are a huge attraction in Las Vegas, and at the Las Vegas Motor
Speedway you can take the wheel of a 600HP NASCAR stock car or a
$265,000 Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera. If you don’t want
to drive yourself, ride shotgun around the oval with an instructor from
The Richard Petty Driving Experience on high-speed “hot laps.” Or try the city’s newest just launched offering and drive three neo-classic American muscle cars
on the open road, through 30 miles of pavement in Red Rock Canyon,
including a new Dodge Challenger SRT8, the Corvette Z06 and the
ridiculously overpowered 662-horsepower Shelby GT 500. For a much
different kind of “driving,” only in Sin City can you take the controls
of a bulldozer or excavator at Dig This Vegas, the city’s heavy equipment experience.
What other fun things might you be missing when you head to Vegas?
What about intimate sommelier-led wine classes or cocktail mixology
school? Man vs. Food-style eating competitions? What about golf lessons
from the guy who taught Tiger Woods? Record breaking extreme roller
coasters and the world’s fastest zip line both come to Las Vegas this
year, along with many more offbeat offerings. Click on the slideshow to
see the whole list.
