Just like any Other profession, it is important to research Realtors the same way you would research a doctor or attorney. Check how long they have been in the business, usually a tenure of over 10 years is an acceptable range. Check them out on Google, they will usually have newspaper articles, history of success, facebook accounts or LinkedIn accounts; that will reveal tons of info including centers of influence. By all means make sure you put them through an interview process just like you would be hiring an employee. That process will determine if you have compatible personalities. Don't let the Realtor tell you what you like or where you want to live, that is your decision; if unsure of those items you can always ask for friendly advise. Make it the best buying experience in purchasing your new home.
